Ernie Chambers (born July 10, 1937) is an Independent from Omaha and the longest serving member in the history of the Unicameral Nebraska Legislature, currently in his forty-fifth year. A self-described "Defender of the Downtrodden," Chambers has been an institution in the Legislature for nearly half a century. In 2015, he successfully repealed Nebraska's death penalty, though it was later overturned by a voter referendum.
