Nebraska Legislature
The Nebraska Legislature is the unicameral (one-house) legislative body in the state of Nebraska, established by a 1934 constitutional amendment and first elected in 1936. From 1936-1962, members of the body were elected to two-year terms in 43 districts. Beginning with the 1964 elections, the body expanded to 49 seats, and members were elected to four year terms, with elections staggered every two years. Members of the Legislature are elected on a nonpartisan basis and commonly referred to as Senators. Term limits took effect before the 2006 elections, limiting Senators to two consecutive terms in office. The current Speaker of the Legislature is Jim Scheer, in his second two-year term as Speaker.
